The Shag, Is it really a thing? And do I need it?

So if you have been trolling through instagram like we have, yeah its a sitch!, you probably have noticed a certain haircut popping up all over it. With a bunch of “Insta Famous” stylists, models, clients and us regular folk sometimes wearing it and cutting it, we have to ask?. Is the Shag haircut really a thing? Yeah I said it, The Shag! Immediately i get flooded with images of 70”s and 80’s rock goddesses in flared skin tight jeans, halter tops, lace and bandannas and crowds of screaming writhing fans. Linda Ronstadt, Patti Smith, Ann Wilson, Grace Slick, The Runaways and the ultimate shag doyenne Stevie Nicks are all popping up amongst our hair dresser friends instapages as major sources of inspiration! And honestly Its too cool not to notice!!!

So with all that being said, how do we wear this iconic look and also keep it looking fresh and current for todays world and its ever-changing trends. Do I layer or not to layer, that is the question!

Our answer at Sweet Jane when deciding to shag is to go to your stylist with some image inspo in hand if you can, second if its a new salon you are trying, look through the salons instagram and see if you find a stylist whose work speaks to you and lastly ask your stylist questions during the service about at home care. We like to let our clients know the first thing that will feel different is the way you will be moving your hair with this new cut. We explain that moving your hair from the back pushed forward in the face adds that bit of sexiness and it will make the new layers and texture come together harmoniously. This is a big takeaway and little nugget of info we like to explain to our guests. Also ask your stylist for some tips on how to hand style or blow-dry at home. These new shapes air dry beautifully with a little product, but if you live in a cold climate ask how to diffuse and/or use heat. We feel that less is more with styling your new cut as this lends to the rock n roll vibes.

We love this new modern take on the shag and we’re pretty obsessed over here.
